Days 1 & 2 – Depart USA / Arrive in Edinburgh Today you’ll depart the USA and fly to Scotland. Upon arrival at Edinburgh Airport you will be met by a driver and transferred to your hotel. Your driver will help with check in; the rest of the day is yours to begin to explore the city.
Day 3 – Explore Edinburgh See Edinburgh at your own pace on a convenient hop-on/hop-off tour with 24 stops including the Edinburgh Castle. You’ll want to walk the Royal Mile, leading down through the “Old Town”U to the Palace of Holyrood House, the Queen’s official residence in Scotland. Across the other side of Princes Street Gardens lies the “New Town” — only 250 years old and an ideal place to spend an afternoon. (B)
Day 4 – Edinburgh / Inverness Today, you’ll be taken to the rental office to collect your all-inclusive rental car. From there you’ll head north to Glamis, for an unforgettable visit to Glamis Castle, the family home of the Earls of Strathmore, and the legendary setting of Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. Continuing on you can travel via Perth, then choose a route that takes you on the Whisky Trail or through the Spittal of Glenshee to another famous royal residence, Balmoral Castle. Your day ends with an overnight in Inverness. (B)
Day 5 – Explore Inverness After breakfast the day is yours to discover and explore the Inverness area. There’s time to visit the romantic ruins of Urquhart Castle, go in search of Nessie at the Loch Ness Monster Visitor Center and see the Culloden Battlefield. You may also want to do some shopping at Forres, regarded as the Harrod’s of the North. (B)
Day 6 – Drive to The Isle of Skye Today’s drive takes you west across the width of the country to the Kyle of Lochalsh, the gateway to the Isle of Skye. You cross over to Skye by way of the new toll bridge and head for Portree, the island’s charming capital. Be sure to stop and visit the Eilean Donan Castle on the way. (B)
Day 7 – Explore the Isle of Skye Spend a full day on the island — go for a hike, visit a whiskey distillery or tour Dunvegan Castle, visit the Clan MacDonald Center or stop by the fairy bridge. The day is yours to explore. (B)
Day 8 – Travel to Stirling Cross over to the mainland by ferry from Armadale to Mallaig and drive, via Trossachs National Park, to the ancient city of Stirling. Built on a rock outcropping right where Scotland reaches its narrowest point, the city has always controlled the north/south routes into the Scottish Highlands. You’ll want to visit Stirling Castle and the nearby Wallace Memorial, which contains the sword of William Wallace (of Braveheart fame). (B)
Day 9 – Return to USA Return your rental car at the Edinburgh Airport and board your flight home. (B) |
