Day 1: Pre-departure briefing at the NY JFK Airport and departure from USA. Dinner and breakfast served in flight.
Day 2-6: St. Petersburg Upon arrival the group will be met and transferred, by private motor coach, to M/S 'RUSSIA”, your floating hotel anchored in the historic Neva River. During the next four days we will visit St. Petersburg, formerly known as Leningrad. For centuries, this city, built on 101 islands and interconnected by 300 bridges, has been the capital of Russia and home to some of its mighty Czars. During the sightseeing city tours you will drive along the Nevsky Prospect with its finest shops, cafes and museums; visit the Peter & Paul Fortress, St. Isaac’s & Kazanskiy Cathedral's, and enjoy one of the Old World’s real treasures the former Imperial Winter Palace, now housing the world famous Hermitage Museum. You will also have an opportunity to attend an Orthodox service and have conversation with St. Petersburg’s leaders of the Orthodox Church. Time permitting, we will visit the Russian Orthodox Seminary and Academy.
Day 7: Crossing of the Ladoga Lake/Valaam In the old times lake Ladoga was called “Nevo”, but its present name originates from the ancient Russian town Ladoga that was one of the vital points on “from Varagians to Greeks” route. Europe’s largest lake, Ladoga is a true wonder of nature. It has about 500 islands, including Valaam Archipelago. Its shoreline is overgrown with graceful pines, willows and alder tree forests, and has long sand and rock beaches. Seldom seen by tourist, Valaam Island is a home to a famous thousand-year-old Transfiguration Monastery. We’ll be the guests of the Monastery for the day, and will have an opportunity to visit with some of the monks, and learn about their life and work.
Day 8: Petrozavodsk The port of Petrozavodsk on the banks of Onezhskoye Ozero (Lake Onega) was founded in 1703 to serve a cannon foundry that was located nearby. Today it is capital of the Autonomous Republic of Karelia. Despite the destruction brought during World War II, Petrozavodsk is an attractive town, built on a series of plateau rising from the water. One of the city’s main architectural sites, that survived the Nazis occupation, is the neoclassical Kruglaya Ploshcad (Round Square).
Day 9: Kizi Island The state architectural, historical and ethnographical museum of the Kizhi Island is a unique collection of Russian wooden architecture. It is said that the 22 domes of the Preobrazenskaya Tsercov (Church of the Transformation), built in 1714, are made entirely out of wood and without the use of nails. The “Kizhi” museum also includes several chapels located at the mainland and nearby islands. It is, perhaps, the most exquisite example of northern Russian wooden church architecture. A dynamic young Orthodox priest, Father Nikolai Ozolin, leads the island’s churches. Father Nikolai, who grew up in Paris and received his theological education in USA, will take us to see churches and will talk about his experience in the Russian church.
Day 10: Goritsy/ Kirilo-Belozersky Monastery After passing White Lake you will enter the Volga-Baltic Canal and Goritsy, a village known for the Kirilo-Belozersky Monastery founded in 1397. It is surrounded by fortress walls, crowned with magnificent towers, and decorated with brick patterns. It also has one of the best collections of Russian Icons in the World.
Day 11: Yaroslavl Founded in 1010 by Grand Prince Yaroslav the Wise, the city stretches for miles along the confluence of Volga and Kotorosl rivers. According to legend, when Prince Yaroslav took interest in establishing new city local clans responded by conjuring a sacred bear to attack him. Yaroslav killed the bear with his axe and founded a town on the spot. Since then both the bear and the Yaroslav’s weapon were featured on city’s coat of arms. Developed in the 16th and 17th centuries, as the Volga’s first commercial port, Yaroslavl was also the center of an independent principality. City’s merchants, prosperous from the Middle East and European trade, competed to build churches bigger than Moscow’s. Their legacy- majestic 17th century cathedrals, unique merchant churches, remnants of an ancient trading center, and Yaroslavl’s spectacular historic and architectural sights will transform your visit into remarkable experience.
Day 12: Kostroma Kostroma is one of the most beautiful towns in the Golden Ring. The main monuments of architecture in Kostroma are the Bogoyavlensky monastery built in 1559-65, and Ipatievsky monastery, including stone walls and towers built in the 16th-17th centuries. Home to the two of Russia’s most prominent noble families Godunovs and Romanovs, ancient Kostroma was closely tied to the fierce high-level power rivalries, before Romanovs established their 300-year dynasty in the 17th century. The town’s pride is the Monastery of St. Ipaty, founded in 1332 by ancestors of Boris Godunov, and later patronized by the Romanov dynasty.
Day 13: Uglich We will Sail via the Moscow Channel to Uglich, a beautiful little town on the shores of the Volga River. It is known for the impressive Cathedral of the Resurrection and St. John’s Church. It is also noted for the Church of St. Dimitri-of-the-Blood, erected on the site where Tsarevitch Dimitri, son of Ivan the Terrible, was murdered in 1591.
Day 14-16:Moscow Moscow is the Capital of Russia and the crossroads of its people. It abounds in modern boulevards and parks, but is also home of over 800 monuments of Russian history and world culture. Your city tour of Moscow will include the Cathedrals and Palaces of the Kremlin, the Red Square with St. Basil’s Cathedral, the Lenin Mausoleum, Bolshoy Theater; the Olympic Stadium and many other points of interest. You may visit Pushkin Fine Arts Museum or the Tretyakov Art Gallery, reopened after a several year remodeling project, or attend theater or world famous Moscow Circus. While in Moscow we’ll visit Danilov Monastery, the headquarters of the Moscow Patriarchate, will have a meeting in the Department of External Church Relations, and will have an opportunity to attend an Orthodox liturgy.
Day 17: Moscow/ USA Last Day of your unforgettable Russian cruise. We hope you enjoyed it! After morning breakfast you’ll be transferred to the airport. |
