   Itinerary
Day 1 – Depart USA
Fly to Moscow on an overnight flight.

Day 2 – Arrive Moscow, Russia
After arriving in this impressive capital city, you are met and transferred to your hotel for a free evening.

Day 3 – Explore Moscow
Your sightseeing tour of Moscow includes Red Square with colorful St. Basil’s Cathedral. You also see the Kremlin Walls, Bolshoi Theater, Sparrow Hills, Novodeyvichy Convent, and the Russian “White House.” This afternoon we visit the Kremlin Armory, Museum and take a walking tour of the Kremlin Grounds. (B)

Day 4 – Travel to Vladimir & Suzdal
The rich history of Vladimir and Suzdal — part of Russia’s Golden Ring — shouldn’t be missed! You’ll start in Vladimir, once the capital of Russia, to see the majestic frescoes in its 12th century Assumption Cathedral and Golden Gate. Next is Suzdal, where you’ll follow cobblestone streets to the 11th century kremlin and one of Russia’s finest architectural treasures — the Holy Gate and the monastery complex. The evening is free in Suzdal. (B,L,D)

Day 5 – Excursion to Palekh,
Russia’s Lacquered Box Capital Today’s adventure takes us to the village of Palekh, stretched out among the woods and fields in a picturesque corner of Russia’s Golden Ring. This is the center of Russian lacquerware art — the elegant black-lacquered art pieces on which miniature paintings of the heroes of Russian folklore come to life. We’ll have the opportunity to visit the local art school and the studios of artisans working on these colorful pieces that are valued the world over for their depth of images and fairytale-like ornamental designs. Returning to Suzdal, the evening is free. (B,L)

Day 6 – Train to St. Petersburg
We travel back to Moscow today and board the Aurora train to St. Petersburg, traveling in the comfort of the business class car. St. Petersburg was founded by Peter the Great as his “Window on the West” and remains one of Russia’s loveliest cities. After being met at the train station, you’ll be transferred to our hotel. (B)

Day 7 – Discover St. Petersburg & the Hermitage Museum
As part of the 300th anniversary celebration in 2003, St. PetersburgU renovated more than 100 buildings, statues and parks — making the city lovelier than ever. We’ll take a morning tour along the Nevsky Prospekt, see the Bronze Horseman, the Spit of the Basil Island, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, Kazan Cathedral and the Cathedral of the Spilled Blood — a brightly painted, multi-domed structure whose beauty belies its name. A highlight of your stay is a visit to the famous Hermitage Museum with its masterpieces by hundreds of artists including Renoir, Da Vinci and Matisse. The rest of your day in St. Petersburg is free; our Russian Service Corps can arrange a ticket to a performance of Russian folk songs and dances or other cultural event. (B)

Day 8 – Visit Catherine Palace & Free Time
In the morning, we drive to Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin) where we visit the spectacular Catherine’s Palace and its famous Amber Room. This beautiful royal estate, constructed by Rastrelli, was built for Empress Elizabeth in a beautiful countryside setting near St. Petersburg. Afterwards, we return to St. Petersburg where the afternoon is at leisure so you can explore the city further on your own. (B)

Day 9 – Travel to Pskov & Local Family Dinner
Leaving St. Petersburg, we travel to Pskov, famous for its ancient and glorious history. The remains of ancient fortress walls, modest and magnificent churches and old houses are scattered here and there in Pskov. We’ll visit the ancient kremlin — the pride of the residents. Built on a narrow cliff at the confluence of the Velikaya and Pskova Rivers, the Pskov kremlin — with its mighty walls and towers — is home to 15th, 16th and 17th century churches. Next we visit Pskov’s Mirozhsky Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was founded in the 12th century. It is one of the most ancient and one of the richest monasteries in Pskov and is most famous for its Byzantine frescoes, 80% of which still survive today. In the evening we have been invited to be guests at the homes of local families; a wonderful opportunity to really get to know the local residents. (B,L,D)

Day 10 – Travel to Tartu, Estonia
Setting out from Pskov, we travel first to Izborsk, a small town mentioned in The Tale of Bygone Years — written in 862. Here we visit the perfectly preserved Izborsk fortress and some of the town’s ancient buildings – including the Church of St. Sergius that houses a museum of archaeological finds. At the Peasant Farmstead one can taste Russian traditional dishes cooked according to the old Izborsk recipes. Next we travel to Tartu, the second largest city of Estonia. Our city tour features Toome Hill Park, the University and Town Hall Square. The evening is free. (B)

Day 11 – Visit Rocca al Mare / Travel to Tallinn
On our drive today, we’ll stop at Rocca al Mare, home to the Estonian Open Air Museum with its unique collection of old Estonian buildings. Tallinn is just a short drive away; after checking into our hotel in the afternoon, the rest of the day is free. (B)

Day 12 – Explore Tallinn
The charming city of TallinnU has many sides to its rich heritage; one is its position as a port city of the Hanseatic League. The town also sports a Scandinavian flavor, due to its location just across the water from Helsinki. While in Tallinn you’ll take a private city tour and see the Town Hall Square, explore the Old Town and pass by the “Kiek-in-de-Kök” tower whose name means “Peep into the Kitchen” because it’s possible to peek into the houses in the lower part of Old Town from the top floor. This 15th century tower is now a museum filled with old maps and models of Tallinn. The rest of your time is free to explore the city before our farewell dinner tonight. (B,D)

Day 13 – Return to USA
You are transferred to the airport for your flight home. (B)
