Day 1 (Mon.)
Board your overnight flight to South America.
Day 2 Arrival In La Paz, Bolivia. (Tue)
After arrival in La Paz, check into your hotel. The balance of the day is free
to rest and become acclimated to the high altitude. This evening enjoy a welcome
dinner hosted by your Tour Director. (D)
Day 3 La Paz. (Wed.)
Today get
acquainted with La Paz with a city tour, which includes visits to the NATIONAL
MUSEUM OF ARCHEOLOGY, the colorful Indian market, and the witch doctor’s market.
Some free time to wander the narrow streets packed with tiny stores and stalls.
Alpaca sweaters, ponchos, Andean musical instruments, old coins, silver
jewelry...you name it, you’ll find it! (B)
Day 4 La Paz-Tiwanaku Ruins-Huatajata On Lake
Titicaca. (Thu.)
Head west this morning to the TIWANAKU RUINS, once the
site of an impressive imperial capital. When the Incas discovered the deserted
city around 1200 A.D., they were inspired by the advanced agricultural and
architectural techniques the ancient villagers had used. Visit the Kallawaya
compound, the subterranean temple of Kontiki, and the Sun Gate. A short drive
from here to Lake Titicaca. At 12,500 feet this vast inland sea is the world’s
highest navigable lake. Spend the next two nights at the Inca Utama Hotel and
Spa in Huatajata, on the most panoramic shore of the sacred lake. Later visit
some of the fascinating museums and exhibits of your resort. Visit the new
Andean Eco Village to learn about the different styles of life on the plateau,
including the artisans and fishing villages and the Uru Chipayas Mud Igloos.
Then meet one of the builders of the RA II vessel used for the late Thor
Heyerdahl’s epic journeys. After dinner visit the unique on-site living museum
of natural medicine doctors, the Kallawayas. (B,L,D)
Day 5 Huatajata. Hydrofoil Cruise to
Copacabana. (Fri.)
Board a sleek hydrofoil this morning and head out to Tiquina Strait. First visit the Sun Virgin Temple on the Island of the Moon.
Next on to the Island of the Sun, where according to legend, the son and
daughter of the Sun God Inti came to earth and established the Inca empire. Your
guide takes you to the INCA STAIRCASE and INCA SPRINGS. Reboard your hydrofoil
and cruise to the important religious sanctuary of Copacabana. Visit the famous
CATHEDRAL and the shrine to the Indian Virgin, known by natives as “La Mamita
del Lago.” Return to Sun Island for lunch at the Uma Kollu archaeological and
panoramic restaurant. Time to relax and perhaps use your included half-hour
treatment at the hotel’s KALLAWAYA NATURAL SPA. Dinner this evening is followed
by a Bolivian folkloric show. One last treat before retiring tonight: visit the
resort’s impressive observatory and learn about the Aymara legends of the
constellations. (B,L,D)
Day 6 Huatajata-La Paz-Cuzco, Peru-Pisac-Yucay.
(Sat.)
Today transfer back to the La Paz airport to board your flight to Peru.
After lunch at a local restaurant drive to the fortress village of Pisac, an old
mountain village whose buildings reflect the brilliant precision of Inca
stonemasonry. Today is market day! Free time in the town center to browse the
many colorful stalls where vendors sell their handicrafts ranging from fine
alpaca sweaters and blankets to hand-painted ornamental dishes and vases. Return
to your hotel and enjoy a relaxing dinner. (B,L,D)
Day 7 Yucay-Machu Picchu. (Sun.)
This
morning en route to Machu Picchu drive to Ollantaytambo, whose timeless stone
terraces remain impressive. Later, board your train for a short journey into the
lush Urubamba Valley. Then transfer to a motorcoach for the ascent to legendary
MACHU PICCHU, “The Lost City of the Incas,” high above the steep valley overlaid
with dense tropical jungle. Your local guide will bring you closer to the lives
and mysteries still hidden in these amazing structures built by the
pre-Columbian masters of this sacred land. Tonight stay at a nearby hotel. (B,L,D)
Day 8 Machu Picchu-Cuzco. (Mon.)
Today
enjoy the tranquility of the morning. You will have some free time to wander the
ruins at your own pace and inhale the magic that is Machu Picchu. After lunch,
return to Cuzco in the late afternoon. (B,L)
Day 9 Cuzco. (Tue.)
Today learn more
about the Incas and their futile struggle with the invading Spaniards. Visit the
imposing CATHEDRAL, the SANTO DOMINGO MONASTERY, the nearby Inca baths of TAMBOMACHAY, and the semi-circular Kenko Amphitheater with its stone altars and
labyrinth of passages. See the ancient site of Puca Pucara before reaching the
TEMPLE OF SACSAYHUAMAN, “House of the Sun,” perched on a hillside overlooking
Cuzco. It still remains unfathomable how and when this fortress of gigantic
stones—with some blocks weighing more than 350 tons—was built. Tonight enjoy
dinner at a local restaurant accompanied by Andean folkloric music. (B,D)
Day 10 Cuzco-Lima. (Wed.)
A short
flight to Lima this morning. Your local expert focuses on the city’s colonial
heritage during a walking tour. Start at the Plaza de Armas to see the
Government Palace and visit the CATHEDRAL, where the skeleton of Francisco
Pizarro is sealed in a wooden coffin. From here, stroll to the venerable SAN
FRANCISCO MONASTERY with its splendid 17th-century cloister murals. Next a stop
at Lima’s famous GOLD MUSEUM. The rest of the afternoon and evening are at
leisure. (B)
Day 11 Lima-Paracas. Nazca Lines.
(Thu.)
Enjoy a scenic drive south along the Pan American Highway to the town of Ica, the wine capital of Peru. Have your camera handy this afternoon as you
board your aircraft for a flight over the Nazca plains. Your pilot will point
out the famous, mysterious markings known as the Nazca Lines—a series of
drawings of animals and geometric figures etched into the parched soil, with
some up to 1,000 feet long. Theories vary, but the most accepted belongs to
German mathematician Maria Reiche, who dubbed the land the “astronomical
calendar” of the ancient Peruvians. Dinner this evening is at your hotel. (B,D)
Day 12 Ballestas Island Cruise-Lima.
(Fri.)
Head north to the Bay of Paracas. Cruise out to the Ballestas Islands,
which are inhabited by a wide variety of sea mammals and exotic birds, including
boobies, sea lions, and Humbolt penguins. The huge Candelabro, a
candelabra-shaped etching on the Paracas cliffside, can also be seen as you
cruise back to shore. Reboard your coach and arrive in Lima by late afternoon.
As a special treat and finale to your vacation, your Tour Director hosts an
elegant farewell dinner at the 16th-century CASA ALIAGA. This grand house, in
continuous occupation by the Aliaga family since 1535, is home to a priceless
collection of Spanish colonial paintings. Take a guided tour before being
treated to a sumptuous three-course dinner with wine in the formal dining room.
(B,D)
Day 13 Lima-Quito, Ecuador. (Sat.)
Today fly to Quito, the capital of Ecuador and a World Cultural Heritage Site.
Enjoy time at leisure to relax or venture out for independent sightseeing.
Dinner is at the hotel. (B,D)
Day 14 Quito. (Sun.)
Your local host
will show you this city on an included sightseeing tour that showcases its
treasures: the historic stone murals of the LEGISLATIVE PALACE; Independence
Plaza and the 16th-century SAN FRANCISCO MONASTERY; the Jesuit’s LA COMPANIA
CHURCH with its stunning golden altars; and the impressive paintings at the
WORKSHOP AND MUSEUM of Oswaldo Guayasamin, one of Ecuador’s most celebrated
artists. Also be sure to have your photo taken in front of the EQUATORIAL
MONUMENT, “the center of the world.” (B)
Day 15 - 19 Quito-Galapagos Islands
Cruise-Quito. (Mon. to Fri.)
A morning flight over the Pacific lands at Baltra, one of the remote Galapagos
Islands. Upon arrival, transfer by coach to Itabaca Channel where you board a
small ferry to Santa Cruz Island for a visit to the CHARLES DARWIN RESEARCH
STATION. At the breeding center see giant tortoises and listen to a brief
lecture given by one of the station guides. There is time to stroll through the
village of Puerto Ayora before your late afternoon embarkation aboard the sleek
MV Santa Cruz for three days of cruising. Your panga (small
speedboat) whisks you into Tagus Cove, a protected natural harbor on Isabela
Island. Flightless cormorants, pelicans, penguins, and boobies crowd the
shoreline. Then cruise to Fernandina Island. From Punta Espinoza, you and your
guide walk across black volcanic rock to see marine iguanas and sea lions. Also
visit Urbina Bay, Punta Moreno, and Hood Island to see more wildlife before
returning to Baltra Island, from where you fly to Quito. Your Tour Director
hosts a farewell dinner, ending an unforgettable experience. (B,L,D daily)
Day 20 (Sat.)
Your homebound flight arrives the same day. (B)
