Day 3 LONDON. A full day to enjoy our exciting program of optional activities. Morning sightseeing features all the famous landmarks: Royal Albert Hall, Kensington’s splendid museums, Knightsbridge with Harrods, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben beside the River Thames. Highlights are a visit to St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, if held. This afternoon you may want to visit Windsor Castle or the Tower with the spectacular Crown Jewels, and tonight a leisurely cruise on the River Thames would be fun. (B)
Day 4 LONDON-BATH-CARDIFF, WALES. Meet your tour director and traveling companions and depart at 8 a.m. for a memorable day’s sightseeing: the gardens of Hampton Court, Henry VIII’s magnificent Tudor palace; Salisbury, the “City of the Soaring Spire”; before passing Stonehenge, one of England’s most intriguing mysteries. Stop in the elegant Georgian city of Bath, famous for its Roman relics. Then across the Severn Bridge, a tribute to modern engineering, into Wales and Cardiff. An orientation drive in the Welsh capital introduces you to the major attractions: Cardiff Castle, Cathays Park, Millennium stadium and the stately civic buildings. (B,D)
Day 5 CARDIFF-WREXHAM, NORTH WALES. Head for the beautiful Wye Valley and the romantic ruins of 12th-century Tintern Abbey, then the scenic Cotswold Hills with a stop in picture-book Broadway. Later tour fascinating Stratford-upon-Avon, a living monument to William Shakespeare, and stop for pictures of Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. Back into Wales to picturesque Llangollen, home of an annual international competition for poets and minstrels, then overnight in Wrexham. (FB,D)
Day 6 WREXHAM-CHESTER, ENGLAND-EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND. In Chester your walking tour includes Roman remains, black and white half-timbered buildings, and two-tiered arcades called the “Rows.” Then some of the best-loved scenery in England: the mountains, lakes, and valleys of the Lake District are preserved as a fine National Park. Follow the shores of Lake Windermere and visit Grasmere, home of the poet Wordsworth. Over the border into Scotland and a visit to Gretna Green, where the blacksmith used to wed runaway couples, on the way through the history steeped Lowland Hills, before reaching Edinburgh. (FB)
Day 7 EDINBURGH. A full day to enjoy this “Prince of Cities”. Morning sightseeing with a local expert introduces you to the 200-year-old “New Town” and famous scientists, inventors and novelists. In the “Old Town”, drive up the narrow Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle to admire Scotland’s Crown Jewels. Afternoon at leisure. Tonight an optional Scottish evening with Highland dancers, bagpipers, and of course the Ceremony of the Haggis. (FB)
Day 8 EDINBURGH-YORK-ROTHERHAM, ENGLAND. At Jedburgh, glimpse the house of Mary, Queen of Scots, and see the abbey ruins before heading towards the Cheviot Hills and the English border. Continue through wild Northumberland National Park to York, England’s most complete medieval city. Stand in front of the great structure of York Minster, then follow your tour director through a maze of quaint streets, including the narrow Shambles. (FB,D)
Day 9 ROTHERHAM-LONDON. Head through the Midlands and continue south, passing the richest farmland in Britain. Stop, with your camera ready, at Stamford in Lincolnshire. Visit the university city of Cambridge, and enjoy a walking tour in one of the country’s oldest seats of learning.
