Day 1 (Fri.) Board your flight to Mexico City. On arrival transfer to the hotel. This evening enjoy a welcome reception and meet your traveling companions. (R)
Day 2 Mexico City, Mexico. (Sat.) A full day to become familiar with the highlights of this former Aztec capital. Founded in 1521, Mexico City is colorful, vibrant and cultured. This morning’s included city tour travels along the famous boulevard, the Paseo de la Reforma, to the Zocalo, or main square. Visit the CATHEDRAL and the NATIONAL PALACE housing various government departments. See the famous Zona Rosa (Pink Zone) where many of the city’s best restaurants and shops can be found, and drive through Chapultepec Park for a visit to the world-renowned NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ANTHROPOLOGY. Here every facet of pre-Conquest Mexican culture is on display. Toltec, Aztec, Maya, Teotihuacán and pre-Classic artifacts are abundant in the crowning glory of this vast metropolis. (B,L)
Day 3 Mexico City-Queretaro. (Sun.) Leaving Mexico City this morning head towards one of Mexico’s most important colonial cities, Queretaro. Founded in 1531, this is the site where Hidalgo’s uprising in 1810 was plotted. It was also the site where Emperor Maximilian surrendered and was shot in 1867, and where the Constitution of Mexico was written. The city’s beauty is enhanced by the many splendid 18th-century mansions and churches. It is also famous for its gemstones, especially amethysts, opals and topaz. (B,D)
Day 4 Queretaro-San Miguel de Allende-Guanajuato. (Mon.) A short drive this morning to San Miguel de Allende, a charming old town set on a steep hillside and populated by American and Mexican artists. Its twisted and winding cobbled streets add to the charm of this National Monument. Late afternoon, continue to Guanajuato. (B,D)
Day 5 Guanajuato. (Tue.) The birthplace of Diego Rivera, Guanajuato has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Zone. It has been important for its silver mining and production since 1548. On this morning’s city tour see the UNION PLAZA, the busiest and most central of the town’s seven plazas; the JUAREZ THEATRE, a magnificent opera and concert hall; and the famous MUSEUM OF MUMMIES. Admire the many fine colonial churches that adorn the town. Guanajuato is renowned for its high quality handicrafts. After lunch maybe take some time to shop for local pottery or leather goods. (B,L)
Day 6 Guanajuato-Morelia. (Wed.) Leaving Guanajuato this morning, head for Morelia, the capital of the state of Michoacan. En route, stop at Yurira, one of the oldest inhabited centers of this region. On arrival in Morelia, enjoy a city tour showcasing its splendid colonial buildings and delightful plazas. (B,D)
Day 7 Morelia-Guadalajara. (Thu.) A short drive this morning leads to Patzcuaro, one of the most picturesque towns in Mexico. From here, take a boat ride to the nearby Isla de Janitzio for spectacular views of the mainland. Then on to Guadalajara, Mexico’s second largest city and capital of the state of Jalisco. Enjoy an evening stroll around the historic downtown area. (B,D)
Day 8 Guadalajara. (Fri.) This morning’s included city tour showcases Guadalajara’s heritage. Stop at the PLAZA DE ARMAS flanked by the CATHEDRAL and the GOVERNMENT PALACE, where in 1810 Hidalgo issued his first proclamation abolishing slavery. LA PLAZA DE LA LIBERACION, with its imposing statue of Hidalgo, is the ceremonial site where the national flag is raised and lowered daily. Then on to the nearby district of Tlaquepaque, renowned throughout Mexico as a significant center for arts and crafts. Enjoy a Mexican style lunch accompanied by a lively mariachi band. Time at leisure this afternoon to shop, visit the many local museums or maybe take a horse-drawn carriage ride for a different perspective of the "City of Roses." This evening your Tour Director hosts a festive farewell dinner. (B,L,D)
Day 9 - 11 Guadalajara-Puerto Vallarta. (Sat. to Mon.) Fly today to Puerto Vallarta, the jewel of Mexico’s Pacific resorts. Spend the next three nights at your oceanfront hotel enjoying the many amenities the resort has to offer—water sports, diving, hiking in the surrounding hills, strolling through the picturesque cobbled streets of the old town center.
