Morning sightseeing with a professional London guide includes all the famous landmarks: Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Palace and the area’s splendid museums, Knightsbridge with Harrods, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben beside the River Thames, Westminster Abbey and ST. PAUL’s CATHEDRAL. A highlight is the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, if held. Time in the afternoon for independent activities. Day 4 London-Calais, France-Belgium-Amsterdam, Holland. (Sun.)
Meet your tour director and traveling companions and depart London. Drive through Kent to the white cliffs of Dover and then enjoy the one-hour Hoverspeed ride across the Channel to France. Travel through the Flanders region of Belgium on your way to Amsterdam, Holland’s 700-year-old capital. After a welcome drink at the hotel, you may want to join your tour director for an optional Dutch dinner with local specialties. (FB)
Day 5 Amsterdam-Rhineland, Germany. (Mon.)
A canal cruise aboard a glass-roofed launch is the best way to get a good impression of how this city was built and how much still remains from the Golden Age. Then board your coach and drive past the Dutch region best known as the locale of A Bridge Too Far near Arnhem to Germany. In Cologne visit the awesome twin-spired GOTHIC CATHEDRAL, and then the afternoon’s highlight: a cruise on the romantic Rhine (weather permitting), past castle-crested cliffs, terraced vineyards, and trim, half-timbered towns. Day 6 Rhineland-Lucerne, Switzerland. (Tue.)
First stop this morning is in Heidelberg to take pictures of the famous red-walled ruins of Heidelberg Castle. Then on through the lush valleys and pine-clad hills of the Black Forest, renowned for its cuckoo clocks. On the Swiss border stop at the thundering RHINE FALLS, then continue to picture-book Lucerne. (BB,D)
Day 7 Lucerne. (Wed.)
In the morning a walking tour is the best way to discover the charm of this city. Admire Thorwaldsen’s LION MONUMENT, the ornate patrician houses of the walled Old Town, and cross the famous covered WOODEN BRIDGE to the Jesuit Church. Balance of the day is at leisure to shop for Swiss watches or to join your tour director for an exciting excursion to the top of a mountain! (BB)
Day 8 Lucerne-Paris, France. (Thu.)
Cross the Swiss border near Basle and enjoy a comfortable drive through the Burgundy wine area and past Fontainebleau Forest to Paris. (BB)
Day 9 Paris. (Fri.)
See the sights on both banks of the Seine: Arc de Triomphe, Opéra, Madeleine, Louvre, Notre Dame Cathedral, Champs-Elysées... For a bird’s eye view take the elevator to the second floor of the EIFFEL TOWER. Balance of the day is at leisure and optional excursions to the Louvre or to the lavish Baroque Palace of Versailles are available.
